About Our Library Moving and Relocation Services
Over our 100+ years in business, Weleski Moving & Storage has successfully relocated library collections of all sizes and types. Our teams are trained to manage books, archives, media, furniture, and shelving systems with precision and respect for catalog integrity. We understand that a library move is about more than moving the actual items. It’s about maintaining the organizational structure that makes your library function, protecting materials that may be irreplaceable, and minimizing the operational downtime that impacts your community.
When you work with Weleski, your library move is supported by structured planning, experienced project management, and systems designed to minimize disruption for staff and patrons.
We’ve relocated academic libraries, public library systems, special collections archives, and corporate information centers across Pennsylvania and Ohio. Each project taught us what works and what doesn’t. We apply those lessons to every library relocation we undertake.
Our library moving services are built around three core principles: preservation, organization, and continuity. Your collection arrives in the condition it left. Your catalog system stays in sync with your physical materials. Your library stays operational.
- Dedicated project coordination: A single point-of-contact manages your entire relocation, coordinating with your director, IT team, and staff
- Detailed pre-move planning and assessments: We survey your collection, measure your new space, and create a move plan specific to your library’s layout and operational needs
- Sequential shelf-to-shelf packing systems: Books are packed in numbered carts that maintain their exact shelf order, eliminating the need for post-move reshelving
- Preservation of catalog and call number order: Physical organization mirrors your cataloging system so patrons and staff encounter materials in expected locations
- Careful handling of rare and sensitive materials: Acid-free packing, climate control, and specialized handling protocols protect rare books, manuscripts, and archival collections
- Library furniture and shelving disassembly/reassembly: All shelving, circulation desks, and equipment are moved and reinstalled according to your new facility’s floor plan
- Climate-controlled transportation and storage: Temperature and humidity are monitored throughout transport and any interim storage period
- Short- and long-term secure storage options: If your new location isn’t ready, we provide climate-controlled storage where your collection is organized and accessible
- Phased relocation support: Some libraries choose to move collections in phases to remain partially operational during transition. We can coordinate these schedules to keep you operational
- Systems coordination and testing: We work with your IT team to ensure RFID systems, barcode equipment, and server infrastructure move and function seamlessly
- Nationwide relocation support: Whether your library is relocating across town or across the country, Weleski can manage the move
- ProMover certification and A+ BBB rating
Why Library Relocation Specialists Matter
A standard commercial moving company treats a library move like any office relocation. A library relocation specialist understands the unique constraints. Call numbers matter. Catalog integrity matters. Your patrons depend on your ability to maintain organization. Your staff’s efficiency depends on the move being done right the first time. Weleski’s library moving experience means fewer surprises and faster operational recovery in your new location.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you handle rare books and special collections during a move?
Rare books, manuscripts, and archival materials require climate-controlled transport and specialized packing. We use acid-free boxes, tissue paper, and padded shelving carts to prevent damage. Temperature and humidity fluctuations are minimized throughout transport. High-value collections can be photographed before and after the move for insurance verification
Will our library's cataloging system stay intact during relocation?
Yes. We work with your IT team to coordinate the relocation of server infrastructure, RFID systems, and barcode tracking equipment. We maintain the physical organization of your collection so that shelving sequences match your catalog database. All technology systems are moved and tested before your collection is relocated.
How do you preserve the order of thousands of books during a move?
We use numbered, rolling carts and sequential packing to maintain shelf order. Each cart is labeled with location and shelf position. Books are packed spine-in rather than spine-out to prevent damage. Upon arrival, carts are positioned in sequence so your team can shelve directly from the original arrangement. This eliminates the need to resort your entire collection.Y
How do you prevent damage to bindings and covers during transport?
Books are packed upright in acid-free boxes with no more than 25-30 pounds per box to prevent spine stress. During transport, boxes are secured so they don’t shift. Climate control prevents humidity spikes that cause warping and mold. Upon delivery, we allow materials to acclimate to the new environment before unpacking to prevent damage from temperature shock
What happens to our library's RFID tags, barcodes, and system data during the move?
Your physical collection retains all RFID tags and barcodes. We work with your IT team to ensure systems are online and synced before relocation begins. Any items that need tag replacement or barcode updates can be processed before or after the move. Database records stay accurate throughout the transition so your system reflects collection location in real time.
